Verde que me muero verde
Quizá no sea el diseño más agradable del mundo. Pero tiene su interés, no crean. Para empezar, hay quien cree que tener la habitación empapelada en verde mató a Napoleón. Indirectamente, en todo caso. En el siglo XIX se pusieron de moda diseños de papel pintado en un bello tono verde llamado Verde de Scheele que daba para hermosos (bueno, para el gusto de la época) diseños, muy alegres y adecuados para, digamos, la habitación de los niños. Era, además, un color bastante nuevo para la época (el color se conocía desde 1795, pero no se pudo manufacturar a gran escala hasta 1812), así que el tono tuvo mucho éxito, entre otras cosas porque en las habitaciones empapeladas con papel verde, las moscas caían como ídems. Y tenían otro detallito que luego comentaré. Por desgracia, la gente también caía como moscas. Los enfermos que yacían en tales habitaciones se morían con bastante más frecuencia de lo que sus dolencias harían pensar. La gente sana que dormía entre estos verdores se ponía enferma, a la larga. No sé cuánto tardó en establecerse la conexión, ni quién la estableció (listísimo debió ser, si fue sólo una persona), pero finalmente se llegó a la conclusión de que el causante era el papel pintado. ¿Tan feo era que la gente se moría por no verlo? No. El culpable, como he dado ya a entender sin mucha sutileza, era el color verde del papel. No por sí solo: se daban una serie de circunstancias, a ver si sé explicarlas. El Verde de Scheele, químicamente, es arseniato de cobre. Que es venenoso, pero sólo si te dedicas a chuparlo con ansia, cosa que -es de suponer- las víctimas de la decoración no solían hacer. Ni, espero, Napoleón. Las otras circunstancias que se daban eran: el clima, y el hecho de que el papel pintado va pegado a la pared. Y el olor a ajo. Estas son las piezas del puzzle. ¿Entonces qué pasaba? Pasaba que la cola para empapelar llevaba -quizá aún lleva, no sé nada de empapelados- mucho almidón. Que resulta ser muy alimenticio y nutritivo para todo tipo de bichos; entre ellos, mohos. Los mohos se dan en climas húmedos como los de Alemania y casi toda Francia y, en general (no me diga, Holmes), todos los sitios donde iba muriendo gente. Así que los mohos, alimentándose del almidón de la cola de empapelar, crecían en las paredes de estas habitaciones. Pero claro, donde hay cola de empapelar hay papel, de modo que el arseniato de cobre del tinte verde entraba también a formar parte de la dieta del moho, que paso a presentar: aquí Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, aquí unos amigos. Llamémosle S. brevicaulis por no agotarme los deditos. ¿Y qué pasaba cuando S. brevicaulis se almorzaba unos miligramos de arseniato de cobre, a guisa de rico aderezo de su dieta de almidón? Pues pasaba que mediante una serie de reacciones bioquímicas muy complejas (eufemismo para decir que no tengo ni idea de cuáles son), el arseniato de cobre era convertido en óxido de trimetilarsina. ¡Hala, otro nombrecito! Sí, pero pasajero. El óxido de trimetilarsina no hubiera supuesto ningún problema. Pero, supongo que por fastidiar, finalmente el óxido era reducido a trimetiltarsina a secas que a) es un gas, b) huele a ajo, y c) es venenosísimo. Para los químicos, he aquí el paso de óxido de trimetilarsina a trimetilarsina, en bellos y convencionales símbolos. ¡Puzzle ensamblado! La ausencia de moscas, el olor a ajo, y la muerte de la gente en esas habitaciones: todo se explicaba porque un hongo que se comía la cola de las paredes y, de paso, expelía un gas letal. Y este es el cuento, niños y niñas, de cómo los pedos de un hongo causaron tantas bajas entre las familias con ansias de decoración de interiores del siglo diecinueve. ¿La moraleja? Estudiad bioquímica y no empapeléis las paredes. Por cierto, lo de Napoleón no me lo creo mucho. No creo que le hiciera falta trimetilarsina para morirse. Pero como hay tanta obsesión por el caballerete, pues supongo que la gente se interesa por cualquier posibilidad. Sobre todo si, como esta, es novelesca a tope.

Pobre Napoleón. Recuerdo haber leído hace mucho tiempo un artículo que relataba cómo se analizaron los mechones de pelo q se conervan de Napoleón y que fueron recortados de sus cabezas para q sus seguidores q estuvieron a su lado durante el/los destierros los guardasen de recuerdo. Analizando desde las puntas hacia la raiz, se encontraron concentraciones cada vez más altas de arsénico, o eso decía el artículo. No hablaban de la hipótesis esta del verdín y si decían que los síntomas de su postrera enfermedad coincidían con los de un envenenamiento crónico por arsénico.
